The Okazaki City Civic Center, as one can surmise from the name, is a facility for the people of Okazaki, strategically built near JR Okazaki station as a base for greater urban development in the cityŐs southern district. The Center opened in April 2002, and houses "Coronet," our city's first concert hall, the Nambu Civic Center Library-a place for continuing education; a City Hall branch office, and the offices of various public interest groups. The basement serves as an emergency storage room, and is intended to serve as a base of operations in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency. The Center is indeed a compound facility, the first of its kind in Okazaki.
On the first floor, the Osamu Uchida Jazz Collection,
donated by Dr. Osamu Uchida (also known as "Dr. Jazz"),
is on permanent display. It is a unique jazz exhibit, featuring
roughly 12,300 records, record jacket displays, a CD listening corner,
and many jazz publications. The collection has many fans who visit
often to listen, look, and enjoy. 2003 marked the 10th year since
the collection was donated, and in order to familiarize the public
with this cultural asset, the Civic Center offers jazz lectures
for beginners and concerts for elementary and junior high school
students as part of its efforts to spread jazz culture, and pass
on this rare collection to future generations.
The "Coronet" concert hall on the 4th floor is open to the public for independent concerts and enthusiastically supports performances so that the public may stay in tune with music culture. Also, Okazaki residents periodically hold "Four Seasons" events in the adjacent courtyard. We invite our online visitors to come visit our Okazaki City Civic Center as well, and enjoy all that we have to offer.
